DIVING IN THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS
Diving in the Galapagos is not for beginners . We recommend you to go for advanced divers. Conditions for diving from moderate to challenging due to currents. depth. the temperature of the water and abundant wildlife. BUT! Those who wish to obtain their PADI can enjoy diving with sea lions, manta rays, watching the colorful fish in coastal waters.
Water temperature the water Temperature at the sea surface from 18 to 30 degrees Celsius.September – November are the coldest months, February – March – April – the warmest. A thermocline is a regular occurrence at a depth of 10-30 m.
Most likely You will dive with medium-strong currents (1-4 miles per hour or 4-6 mph). Likely to occur when the diver picks up surface flow.
Relax, take positive buoyancy and signal to those who remained on the boat. If you are in a group, ride together.
From July to December to the shores of the Galapagos Islands from the South – East comes within the Humboldt during the warm season( January – June) from the East comes the Panama current.
Visibility of 30 metres is not uncommon in the waters of the Galapagos. In many dive sites you can expect visibility of 15-25 m. In some areas at certain times from the abundance of plankton, the water is green.
Drift diving Many of the proposed dives in the Galapagos – drift dives.The boat that accompanies the divers and pick them up in the site of the appearance on the surface.
Deep dive Dive more than 20 metres is considered a deep dive. Is it the first morning. Expect thermoclines and cold water. The most interesting dives in the Galapagos –deep and along the walls, making immersion difficult.
Night dive a Night dive is conducted in shallow water without drift.Nocturnal crabs,stars, sea cucumbers, fish are easily visible at night, the first 6 meters when submerged fluoresce. It’ll be like flying in the starry sky! Even when you turn off the flashlight glowing in the water are easily visible to turtles, seals and other animals.
Marine life of the Galapagos Islands.
Invertebrates 24 species of sea urchins, 28 of sea stars, 30 of sea cucumbers, 600 species of mollusks and 100 species of crabs.
Corals – serifovich 31 species of corals (30% of them endemic) and 13 reef builders. The corals are mainly located in Darwin and Wolf where the water is warm.
Fish More than 300 species( 17% endemic). Large schools of fish and the Creole (Gringo or Paranthias colonus), Salem black and plasata, group Almaco jacks (Palometa or Seriola rivoliana), barracudas (Sphyraena idiastes), Moorish idol and dancing rainbow wrasse are abundant.
On black corals can be seen the Pacific sea horse (Caballito de Mar or Hippocamous ingens). fantail sea needle ( Pez pipa or Doryrhamphus excisus) is hiding in small crevices. red-lipped bat –fish( Pez Murciélago or Ogcocephalus darwini). lying on the sand, red is a frog fish (Pez Sapo or Antennatus sanguineus). changes color depending on the color of the surrounding sponges and other…
Lots of spotted Moray eels, huge manta rays ( up to 7 m) often come to the attention of divers.
Mammals Two species of sea lions live on the Galapagos Islands –sea lion (Lobo marino or Zalophus californianus wollebaeki) and fur seal ( Lobo de dos pelos or Arctocephalus galapagoensis). Only in the waters of the Galapagos frolic 80,000 members of this species. Wearing a mask, don’t forget to bring your camera. Do not try to touch animals – they may bite !
The most common whales Brides Whale (Balaenoptera Edeni), Sperm Whales (Physeter Macrocephalus), Killer Whales (Orcinus Orca), (Megaptera Novaeangliae). Snarling between the Islands can make close contact with whales. Approach the whale from behind. Don’t make a noise. Encounter with dolphins – enjoyable – small regular Dolphin and Dolphin-the bottlenose often accompany the boat.
A decompression chamber is located in Puerto Ayora.
One of the benefits of diving with accommodation in hotels – You go to dive in Your chosen location. for example Gordons of Rock. Here the largest population of animals and there are fewer tourists than in other places.
Dives start from Puerto Ayora. Departure, usually at 07.00, morning dive, lunch, rest,move to the next dive site, the dive and return to Puerto Ayoro in the evening.
Unlike most dive sites, dive sites on the Islands Darwin and wolf require overnight stay.
