How to make a pond with his hands
The ancients said that there are two things you can watch endlessly: the fire and water. Making a garden pond, you will enjoy the play of light and shadow on the surface. In addition, the pond will settle a variety of small animals: insects, microscopic crustaceans. You can look a variety of fish and plant plants. Evaporation leads to the fact that the reservoir is established a special microclimate, so the banks can grow moisture-loving plants. The appearance of the pond depends primarily on its location, size and shape. If you correctly identify the three main parameter, the pond will be in harmony with the rest of the garden.
The choice of location for the pond.
If you are planning to keep fish or grow water lilies, the pond needs to be in the sun for at least five hours a day. In other cases, the location of the ponds is determined by the slope of terrain and the style of the garden. The most organically will look in the reservoir, arranged in the bottom of the plot. However, if you wish, you can make it in any other place where it will look good. If you want to make a fountain or a cascade or set a filter, it is most convenient to place the reservoir near the source of electricity.
The size and shape.
In principle, the larger the pond the better. In small ponds the water evaporates quickly, and an abrupt change temperaturevariation affect the fish. In shallow water near the shore you can put elegant marsh grasses, however, the main part of the pond (at least two thirds of the square) must be deeper than 600 mm. This will allow you to grow plants that require sufficient depth, in particular water-lilies. In addition, in this pond the fish will be protected from cats and sunburn.
The coastline can be formed into any shape, depending on the General style of the garden. In a landscaped Park, a pond should look as natural as possible, and in a regular well will look like a pond of regular geometric shape.
How to make a pond.
Determine where will be held the coastline. If you want to make a pond of irregular shape, the line mark, laying on the ground a long rope. If you prefer a square or rectangular shape, markings pull the twine between the pegs. Earthworks will require big physical efforts, therefore, in determining the area of the future reservoir, it is necessary to realistically assess their capabilities. Easiest way to ensure the water resistance by covering the pond bottom with special material. The lining is made from synthetic rubber. It is quite expensive, but very durable. Its a guaranteed life of 20 years and in real good conditions — up to 50. Black polyvinyl film much cheaper but it is less durable.
First of all remove the top fertile layer of soil, spread it around the site or save to use in the future. Dig the trench so that the wall had a slope of 45°. During heavy rainfall the pond can overflow, so it is necessary to provide a drain for water.
The side is needs all sides to be the same height. To test, use a spirit level. Clean the bottom and the banks from anything that may damage the pavement.
Sprinkle the bottom of a sand pit with a layer of 50-80 mm and then cover the bottom and sides with waterproof material. Not necessarily to straighten every crease. Push the material along the edge of the bricks and start filling the pond with water. During filling, it may be necessary to slightly let go of the edge of the material with one of the sides. During the week, while the pond will settle, you can check for leaks in it.
To hide the edge of the pavement, dig around the perimeter of the pond a trench depth of 150 mm. Lower in this trench the edge of the material, and lay it soil, sand or cement. If any edge of the material cannot be buried, it needs to be cut. In conclusion, put a raised edge of stone, bricks or wood, so that this finish closed trench.
Below is described the construction of the pond a depth of 450 mm (this depth is needed for the cultivation of water lilies).
Required tools and materials: concrete mix or cement and sand, wheelbarrow, Board for mixing concrete, shovel, trowel, spirit level, bricks, stones for finishing the edge, waterproof material for pond lining and pump.
Select a location for your pond and dig a pit depth of about 600 mm. the Shape of the pit should conform to the shape of the pond. Add 230 mm on each side, to fit brickwork (see diagram below). If you are going to keep fish, we recommend to make the pond deeper and the walls higher. The walls that rise above the water surface at 250 mm, to protect the fish from jumping ashore.
Fill the bottom of the pit a layer of concrete thickness of 100mm.
Fold brick walls 230 mm thick and then cover the walls from the inside a mixture of cement and sand in the ratio 1:4.
Cut a piece of waterproof material. Its length should be equal to the sum of the length and twice the depth of the pond, and the width is the sum of width and twice the depth. Each side should leave a 10 percent margin. Place the material into the pit, bending at the corners.
Fold the edges of the material over masonry and temporarily push the bricks. Fill the pond with water. Trim edges of the material along the outer edge of the bricks, and then make a side of stones laid on mortar.
Optionally, you can install a small fountain pond. View its stream — great fun and melodious sound of water soothing. The base of the fountain is the pump, which is connected to the nearest source of electricity. These pumps are absolutely safe, most of them work from low voltage through a transformer. The cable should be buried in a shallow trench so you don’t accidentally damage it. Take the time to run fish. Water should stand, and aquatic plants to take root.
